Why am I running for Burnsville’s City Council?
I’ll get to that, but first let me answer some other important questions.
What do I know about this city?
I know what you know. I drive on the same streets as you do. I walk on the same sidewalks, shop in the same stores. I pay taxes as you do, so I’m concerned about city expenses. I am distressed about areas in town that seem to be getting run down. I have concerns about public safety as you do. But I have confidence that our police and fire departments do a good job—with our cooperation, because they cannot be eyes and ears for all 60,000 of us at once. What I don’t know about the city I learn by listening to city staff and to you.
What is my experience with the operation of the city?
I have a good understanding of zoning and land use. I served for six years—1999 to 2005—on the Burnsville Planning Commission. Zoning influences our lives everyday. Development affects your services, parks, and streets.
My approach to problem-solving is rooted in common sense.
Every problem is an opportunity in disguise. This is a philosophy I applied in my career, as a volunteer and especially as my late husband and I raised our three children here in Burnsville. We can find the opportunity hidden in problems only by listening—to all sides: listening to City Staff, listening to fellow Council Members, to outside experts, and—most important—listening to you.
So, why am I running?
You, as a tax-paying citizen of Burnsville deserve City Council members who listen to all sides before reaching conclusions. My style is one of listening, collaboration, and cooperation. I can bring these qualities to our City Council. It is the best way to get things done.
I would appreciate your vote on November 4, 2008.
